Mama Henley is the Last Woman in America Who...

Mama Henley is the last woman in America who does not have a cell phone with texting. I do not have a qwerty keyboard, a cute pink Blackberry, or an I PHone. I just have my good ole beat up Samsung. Thankfully my contract has been up for 2 years and no one "owns" me. I can walk over to any phone company and become a new customer. So, that's where you come in! What phone do you have? Do you love it? Why do I need texting? I am attached to my computer. Is that not enough? How much do you pay per month for texting and internet on your phone? I am trying to avoid huge monthly fees.

Do you think I should get the new I Phone? As much as I love all Apple products, will I Love it?

Also, hubby mentioned buying me a Kindle or Nook over Christmas but decided to wait. Why do I need those? Can you get library books uploaded for free on Kindle or should I stick with hardback books? Tell me tell me. Mama Henley needs your help!

You will become attached to your smart phone! I have a droid because up until a couple weeks ago verizon didn't have the iphone. I love having a smart phone. We pay around 200 for 3 smart phones with unlimited everything (minutes, texting, and data plan). Hope this helps!!!

Thanks for putting this out there! I'm interested in the responses as I'm in the dark ages to with a simple phone and no texting abilities. There are only a hand full of times when I think it would be nice to text, but over all, I'm not one that is attached to my cell phone. And my fear is that one I start texting, I'll be hooked.

Love my iphone! And I have Kindle on it so no need for a separate Kindle. I can read my books, emails, blogs, text when on the go or sitting in the car line or the airport, etc... AND it takes great high-definition photos and videos--as good as any point-and-shoot! I have the youtube app with all of K's favorite sesame street and yo gabba gabba videos and it has been a lifesaver in moments when I've needed a quick way to occupy her for a few minutes. I have skype on it and can talk to friends and family all over the world (including Africa and China) for about 3 cents a minute. I pay about $70/month, which is only slightly more than my old phone and I've never run out of minutes/data usage. Its like having my computer on the go, only it fits in my purse. And I got a cute pink otter box case for it so it's very protected (I have no hesitation handing it to my 20 month old). Get one. You will love it.

I love love love my iphone. I'd definitely wait for it to go to verizon. I like ATT ok...but I've just heard MUCH better things about verizon. :)

I was a 1st generation iphone user....family bought it for me...I put it down and said "THIS IS CRAZY, I DON"T NEED THIS!" 2 days later, I couldn't do without it. I could fill a page about HOW AWESOME the iphone is....trust me, as your kids get older and older...the TEXTS HELP!! Even now with the iphone 4 we could all VIDEO CHAT on our phones....great for the kids away at college! The apps are fantastic...all of their schools are linked to my phone and I could pull up websites instantly....great for info.
If you have any doubts...email me....like I said, I could fill a page! PS, careful with VERIZON....BIG SNARFU is that you can not use multiple features at once.

With ATT for instance, I was on the phone with echo gloves telling them I was disappointed with the quality. She asked me to send a picture. WHILE TALKING to her, I hit a button, take a picture, email it to her and seconds later she SEES it!!

I am living a similar situation to yours and have been looking for a couple of months...while no longer a contract w/Verizon, that is where I will make that purchase.
From listening/watching colleagues/parents 'upgrade' over the past few years...the learning curve is high w/Droid or iphone...calmer personalities sometimes appear as if they now have ADD or ADHD...technology is terrific..while there is immediate gratification these uses over time desensitize personal interaction as you connect with a device...children WATCH WHAT WE DO...there are some recent studies noting multi tasking has over longer periods of time added to anxiety... the data plan would add about $30 exra a month and unlimited texting $5 a month..separate charge from skype...WS... Nope- I am right next to you in American with my old Verizon Samsung flip! I do have the nook color and I love it. You can load on magazines, books, etc. It is easy to use- lights up the words (which helps me at eye sight waining at 41). It is also have Pandora- free internet music. No downloading charges, etc. Extras also include browsing on the internet, crossword puzzles, and the like. You can even put childrens' book on your nookcolor. Keep us posted what you get!

I am also glad that you asked this question. I have had my same cell phone for years.Wasn't sure if I even needed to upgrade since I don't text. Good information!

I'm with verizon, so I have a Droid. But I also have an iPad. I have the kindle app on both and the cool thing is that I can go back and forth between the two Nd it remembers the last page read - regardless of which gadget I was on!

Now that verizon is getting the iPhone, I can't wait to get it. My Droid is great, but I think it would be nice to be able to steam all my apps between them.

You will need to text once your kids are big enough to have phones:). Kids these days don't talk on the phone much, they text instead...

I ditto all the comments. Iphone with verizon svc. on a practical note. When we were in Boston on a school field trip the teacher wanted to know where the "Make way for ducklings" bronze was and we were able to google map it and find it on our handhelds. When we needed a restaurant. Googled it! It is useful! And you can keep up with your emails and they don't pile up. There's mobility for you which is nice.

I have a texting phone plus a Nook Color since I can surf the net(email/facebook) on that. The Nook is the only ereader that currently is able to access the public library ebooks. Love it so far! Good luck, AH! :)

I just got an iPhone from my sister for Christmas and I LOVE it!! I use it for all kinds of things now (spelling game for the kids spelling lists each week, NFP charting, camera, texting, phone, educational games for the kids). I definitely think texting is super (less interruption, but info tranfer). I like that I can use the phone for a camera for little things and don't have to cart around my big Canon (I do wish I had the G4 with the better camera ability).

Nww that the iPhone is available on Verizon, that's great.

Go get a smart phone, Mama Henley, and don't look back!

Oh, failed to mention that I read my Kindle books on my iPhone now too. I didn't think the print would be big enough, but it's just fine. If I didn't already have a Kindle, I would probably just stick with the iPhone. I have my Bible on it! Soooo great that I can read my Bible while waiting anywhere.
