My Mama Always Said

My Mama always said it's better to use your sterling silver from your Great Grandmother Scarlett O'Hara Butler rather than to let it sit in a drawer. Mama and Papa insisted that Darling Hubby and I not register for silver plate place settings. In fact, we were forbidden to do so and told that if we did, I would not inherit my grandmother's fine sterling. Instead, they said we should use the good stuff every day and just hand wash as needed. Our sterling has been loved and used daily for the past 14 years. Mama and Papa wouldn't have it any other way, and now, neither would I!

Do you ever put it in the dishwasher or do you always handwash??

Agreed!

Life is too short to save only for "the important" dates...every day is a blessing and every day is "important".

Good for you!!!

My mother's best friend ONLY uses her silver. It's in her silverware drawer, which is actually to appropriate name. It's not the silver plate or stainless drawer! I do love my Reed and Barton Shell stainless... but maybe I should pull out my great-grandmother's sterling every now and then. Thanks for sharing!

Happy Mommy, I put it in the dishwasher a lot but do try to be careful with the knives because of the handles.

My mom never used paper plates. She always said *Why would I use paper plates for my family and good dishes for my guests"?....So, to this day, I don't ever remember serving my family on a paper plate(except for picnics, etc). So true. Why would I treat those dearest to me any less than I would treat a guest? The plates didn't always get washed right away as we were a VERY BUSY family of five, but I always remembered what my mom said...and it felt good!

I love that I have a complete set of sterling that was my mother-in-laws but it is so u-g-l-y I never use it ( I know; I am an ungrateful witch.) I want a complete set of Old Master (or Frnacis the First) so bad I can taste it--now that, I would use every day ;)

Pink & Green, could you sell your mother in law's sterling to buy the Francis the 1st or Old Master? I think that's what you should do!

I sincerely believe that real silver makes food taste better! And it definitely makes for a prettier table indeed! We use ours as our everyday and just always put it in the dishwasher and I polish it monthly. I am so glad to know that you always enjoy yours also! Life is too short not to!

Couldn't agree with you more! Why save {anything} when you can use and enjoy it today!

Love the teacher gift ideas ~ I'd be thrilled with any of them :)

We used our sterling and china regularly growing up. Unfortunately because I do not speak to my mother, I will not inherit it. But my word is it stunning. She actually has two antique sets of sterling. I have a set from my dad's mother though- not quite as beautiful but still nice as many people don't have any these days due to price.
